The Influential Nonprofit Episode 53: Haley Cooper: How Be A Self Aware Leader
Haley Cooper is a certified fundraising executive, certified stress-management coach, and certified EMC Train The Trainer. Her mission is to empower, elevate and engage nonprofit leaders to build healthy, thriving organizations.
Influence is rooted in an emotional connection. What you put out is what you get back. If your gas tank is empty, you’re not going to be able to be as productive or as powerful as you’re going to be.
As members of the nonprofit community, we tend to take care of the needs of other people without recognizing our own needs. Some also belong to a culture that sees asking for help as something that shows weakness. Asking for help takes courage because it’s difficult.
Building an emotional connection and developing our empathy for others starts with developing a deep awareness of our emotional states and needs.
Go to your team members and ask them how you could serve them. That’s the best way to make sure that people feel seen and heard and that they are being allowed to be the best that they can be in the organization.
“In order to do successful fundraising, you have to have a connected team, you have to have a connected organization and everyone working towards the same mission, everyone understanding their value and how important they are to achieving that mission.”
“Emotional connection is the bond that holds us all together. Every single person, that’s our basic need, is to feel valued, heard, loved and cared for, that they’re important and that they matter.”
“...Making sure people understand why they’re there, what the mission is, how they could contribute and use their skills. Everyone doesn’t have time, they want their time to be valued. ” - Haley Cooper
